Muxagat

Since its inaugural vintage in 2002, Muxagat (pronounced Moo-sha-got) has sought their true north expression of the Douro Valley, Portugal’s most famous wine region. Located in the village of Meda in the Douro Superior, the winery is closer to Spain than Porto and the Atlantic Ocean. The magnificent vineyard sits majestically at high elevation, where it is impossible not to marvel at the serene beauty surrounding you. The rugged beauty of Meda and the surrounding villages and vineyard land is undeniable.

Owned and operated by Susana Lopes and her family, Susana is the second generation stewardess of this project. Susana is a force in this region, and she is unafraid to walk boldly in a different direction than more traditional-leaning producers. Her vision brings forth both the field blend wines the region is known for but also single varietal whites and reds that show her land and the native grape varietals in their individual glory. Her husband Maike tends the vines.

The winemaking process is guided by legendary winemaker Luis Seabra with resident winemaker, Ana Silva overseeing daily operations in the cellar. Muxagat was born from a desire to explore and experiment with the unique terroir of the Douro Superior while also being a caretaker with future generations in mind. Viticulture is focused on long-term sustainability.

The winery is housed in a century-old barn. Walking through the property with Susana is a visceral experience in handmade, artisanal winemaking, and you can feel the care they put into each step. I knew immediately I had to share these wines with in the United States, and my relationships with Susana and Luis is a primary reason I started JD Selections.
